Human Development Index (HDI)
Human Development Index was formulated in 1990 by the economist Mehboob-ul-Haq associated with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and his associate economist Prof. Amritya Sen and Singer Hans. It is published based on the parameters of life expectancy, education, and income.
The HDI report was first released in 1990. After that, this report is published every year. The concept of HDI is based on the concept of ‘Expansion of Capabilities’. It has three basic dimensions – knowledge, life expectancy at birth, and standard of living displayed in terms of purchasing power adjusted per person.
